about

"This is a traditional song of the Appalachians, written, in all probability, by the slaves in the 19th century and recently made famous by the movie 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' Ron always told me that in that movie, the climate and environment of North Carolina when his parents were children, was perfectly depicted, so this song is dedicated to them. The river metaphorically represents the boundary between freedom and slavery, between earth and heaven, and everyone here (mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, sinners) are called to go to the river to pray. The little girls at the end represent the continuity and hope: parents teach their children the road to the River ". Marco Zanzi

“Brano tradizionale degli Appalachi scritto con tutta probabilità dagli schiavi nel 19° secolo e recentemente reso famoso dal film ‘Fratello, Dove Sei?’ (O Brother, Where Art Thou?). Marco Zanzi

lyrics

13 - DOWN IN THE RIVER TO PRAY
Traditional arr. Manuel Corato

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good old way
And who shall wear the starry crown
Good Lord, show me the way

O brothers let's go down
Let's go down, come on down
O brothers let's go down
Down in the river to pray

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good old way
And who shall wear the starry crown
Good Lord, show me the way

O sisters let's go down
Let's go down, come on down
Come on sisters let's go down
Down in the river to pray

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good old way
And who shall wear the robe and crown
Good Lord, show me the way

O fathers let's go down
Let's go down, come on down
Come on fathers let's go down
Down in the river to pray

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good old way
And who shall wear the robe and crown
Good Lord, show me the way

O mothers let's go down
Let's go down, don't you want to go down
Come on mothers let's go down
Down in the river to pray

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good old way
And who shall wear the robe and crown
Good Lord, show me the way

O sinners let's go down
Let's go down, come on down
Come on sinners let's go down
Down in the river to pray

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good old way
And who shall wear the robe and crown
Good Lord, show me the way

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good old way
And who shall wear the robe and crown
Good Lord, show me the way!

O mothers let's go down
Let's go down, don't you want to go down
Come on mothers let's go down
Down in the river to pray

As I went down in the river to …
