"A song I wrote back in the 80's celebrating the little cotton mill town of Avalon where my Grandfather
grew up. It was a very small mill village with pretty much all life surrounding the old cotton mill there. The mill burned down in June 1911 and my Grandfather often told me about the story. After the mill burned, they moved all the houses on rolling logs down to the town of Mayodan (named for the confluence of the Mayo and Dan Rivers) about 5 miles away. My Grandfather helped with the moving of all the houses. There's nothing left there now for you to see !" Ron Martin

AVALON
Ron Martin
On a hot summer's day in June
A long, long time ago
People were taking life so easy
People were taking life so slow
But time stood still
On that hot summer's day
First a puff of smoke from the window sill
Soon it had engulfed the entire mill
They pumped water up from the Mayo below
But they couldn't stop the black inferno
Avalon you've burned today
Avalon you've burned away
Avalon you've burned today
But not in my mind
Not in my mind
There’s nothing left there now for you to see
They took all the houses and they moved them away
Yeah, they moved them all away
Oh, yeah they burned away
I still remember it
Long time ago
Avalon you've burned today
Avalon you've burned away
Avalon you've burned today
But not in my mind
Not in my mind
Burn, burn oh, yeah!
Instrumental
On a hot summer's day in June
A long, long time ago
People were taking life so easy
People were taking life so slow
